En Primeur

Welcome to David Watt's Bordeaux En Primeur selection. David's tasting notes on the 2016 Bordeaux en primeurs.

I have always believed that it is very difficult to compare vintages as they are all really unique, but it is possible to consider similarities between the Vintages. I have now returned from my 34th consecutive Bordeaux tasting trip so I have a great many Vintages and tasting notes to choose from.

The 2016 Vintage is certainly an excellent one with some outstanding wines having been made. The wines have very good acidity levels and relatively low alcohol. The fruit is very pure and the tannins soft and ripe. Overall the wines show great concentration of ripe fruit with purity and richness.

Generally I believe that the 2016 Vintage is better that the 2015. There is a touch of 1990 within it because there is quite a lot of front-loaded fruit. It has the smoothness of 2009 and the structure of some of the 2010’s.

Undoubtedly the Bordelais will be looking to maximise prices. Demand is now such that these wines will sell around the world whether you and I buy them and we do in the UK suffer a reduction in buying power because of the lower exchange rate. Nevertheless there are many that I really do like and given that each year the amounts released en primeur are usually smaller than the previous vintage, there will be a number of wines that will be hard to get at these prices in years to come.
